What is Search Engine

A Search Engine is basically a software which is being connected in the Internet that looks for a database of information to peoples queries.

          So its actually a Input-Output device where billions of data already stored in different servers. Now when people search for a particular information in the Search Engine they show information stored in their server.the Search Engine searches for results that perfectly matches with the peoples query.

              As of today there are so many different Search Engines having their own unique features.

A Brief History of Search EnginE :

1990         

Archie                       

The first ever Search Engine - it hunts for  FTP sites to create index of downloadable files. 

1991

World Wide Web Virtual Library (VLib)[www] 

Tim Berners-Lee build a Virtual Library which works as a Search Engine for their Queries.   

               

1992      

Veronica

It Searched file names and first ever built text based Search Engine.

1993

Jughead

It also looked for  file names and titles but only one server in a given time range.

1994  

1. Yahoo launched by Chembridge University students.

2. Infoseek

• WebDevelopers  now could  submit a page at realtime.  

1. WebCrawler 

   

   • First crawler that ever indexed entire pages.
   
   
   • In that exact  year that Yahoo! Search launched, watching the launch of Web Crawler. The amount of data needed to do the search engine was actually very much slow to be  used during the day of that time.

• Created by six Stanford undergrads
•  Lycos search engine also launched

1996

Google’s beginnings: BackRub                                  

• Larry and Sergey began working on BackRub, a search engine which utlized backlinks for search
• It ranked pages using citation notation, meaning any mention of a website on another site would count it as a vote toward the mentioned site
• A website’s “authority” or reliability came from how many people linked to that site, and how trustworthy the linking sites were.
• The primary idea used in backlinks to help rank websites for  a better search in search results.The backlinks display to you how one website is being linked to another website/page counts as a vote. This idea is the basis of a website’s authority. Today’s algorithm still is on the same initial concept of backlinks.

AskJeeves/Ask.com

•  The cast of a natural language Search Engine where human editors tried to match  WITH SEARCH QUERIES.
• Powered by DirectHit, that aimed to rank links of webpages by its popularity.

MSN Search                          

• Relied on Overture, Looksmart, and Inktomi until Google proved their backlinks model

1999

1. Google was funded from Sequoia Capital.

2. AOL opts Google as their  search partner.

3.Sequoia Capital and others invested  in Google.

2000

The Teoma engine is launched.

2001

The search engine Excite goes bankrupt and was sold  for $10 million.

2002

Yahoo! starts working on their search engine again, beginning to acquire other search directories. Until this time, they had outsourced their search services

2003

Google releases their first officially named update, "Boston," announced at Northeastern's SES Boston

2004

Microsoft projects their new MSN search engine.

2005

MSN drops Yahoo! organic results for own in-house technology in January 2005

Google created the SERP  with “Universal Search”— by adding  new features like News, Video, Images, Local, and other verticals.

2008

Google launches “Google Suggest”—usersto  receive dropdowns of recommended topics related to their queries.

MSN/Live Search turn into Bing.

Caffeine- Google update                                 

• A web indexing system, launched by Google,which enhances upto 50% fresher & faster search results

2011

Panda - Google update                    

“Panda” impresses a remarkable change in Google’s  algorithm. 11.2% of Google search results in the US are influenced.

2012

Penguin- Google update                   

           

• Google’s “Penguin” update endures to keep SEOs on their hands.

2013

Hummingbird- Google update            

• The first ever Search algorithm with the ability to interpret the bound behind a query, rather than just the language.

2014

Yahoo! signs a deal to be Mozilla Firefox’s default search provider inside the United States

Pigeon- Google update                   

A Google update to show more relevant and accurate search results.

2015

Mobilegeddon- Google update

• Google releases an update designed to benefit mobile-friendly pages in mobile search results

RankBrain

• Google declares that machine learning has played a definite role in Googles  ranking algorithm.

2016

Google launches the new “Possum,” — local search results are assorted and
 spammy sites are fined.

“Penguin”  turns  into a part of Google’s core ranking algorithm

2017

Google begins black listing sites with disturbing popups  and very absurb quality backlinks.

A Google search algorithm update named “Fred” punishes sites with minor-quality backlinks, and sites that compile monetization over user experience.
